New childhood obesity figures reveal stark inequalities

Obesity prevalence for children living in England's most deprived areas is more than double that for children living in the least deprived areas, with boys more at risk than girls.

The latest figures from the Government’s National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) for England show that more than a fifth of Reception children and a third of children in Year 6 are now overweight or obese.

The obesity figures show a slight increase on last year, with 9.3% of Reception children and 19.8% of Year 6 children found to be obese.

The figures also reveal the inequality in children's obesity levels, with rates for children living in the most deprived areas in both age groups more than double those for children living in the least deprived areas.
