EU dairy support payments start

Defra have announced the start of EU support payments to help dairy farmers manage cash flow problems.

Defra said that the UK government negotiated the support package from the EC in September. They have agreed to pay a flat rate  linked to milk production of 0.176p per litre to farmers in England, Scotland and Wales and 0.226p per litre in Northern Ireland. The payments will continue over November and December. The NFU welcomed the payments but said that while the average support package will be £1,800, UK dairy farmers are on average £6,000 a month worse off compared to this time last year.
