As part of the support being provided to SME bakery owners, the Real Bread Campaign is collecting details of retail and wholesale bakeries that have closed in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

We are doing so to help fellow bakery owners who have closed, letting them know they’re not alone, and to inform and inspire them about re-opening.

Back in business

Please send us a few lines on:

  • How, why and when you took the decision to close
  • The negative impact this had on you, your staff members, your business and your customers
  • When you reopened
  • What it took to get to that point / what changed to make you feel able to do so
  • The things that you are now doing differently to before
  • How you communicated / are communicaing all of the above with customers
  • Any positive things that have come out of the situation

If possible, direct quotes from you, staff members or customers that can be published would be useful, too.

Still closed

If you are not yet open again, please send us a few lines on:

  • How, why and when you took the decision to close
  • The negative impact this had on you, your staff members, your business and your customers
  • What do you think will have to happen / need to change to allow you to do so?
  • If you have been doing something community-focussed in the meantime (eg we've heard of places baking on a voluntary basis for local key workers and vulnerable people) please mention that, too.
  • How you communicated / are communicaing all of the above with customers
  • Any positive things that have come out of the situation

Get in touch

Short notes are fine as we're aiming to collect snapshots from a number of bakeries.

If, on the other hand, you fancy writing a full article (500-1000 words) like Emma Parkin, or this blog post by the team at Leeds Bread Coop, please go for it.

Please send to: realbread@sustainweb.org

We plan to use the information and quotes we collect to write an article, and will also keep on file for opportunities to feed into governmental meetings, reports, consultations etc., as well as our ongoing media work.
