More support for organics called for

New statistics show that the area under organic cultivation has fallen slightly, even while demand is growing, leading to lost opportunities and increased imports. The Soil Association is calling on the next government to boost support for organics.

According to Defra's latest statistics (here), the area of land under organic cultivation  fell slightly from 2015-2016, to just 2.9% of the total farmed area in the UK. Meanwhile, the number of organic processors increased. Analysing the figures, Sustain member the Soil Association concludes that organic farmers are increasing production from existing organic land to try and meet surging demand.

The gap between supply and demand means that organic products that could be produced here are being imported. The Soil Association is calling on the next government to avoid this missed opportunity by offering stronger support for organic production. Read its statement here.
