Although the food sector is famous (or infamous) for its poor pay levels, there are neverthless a few people who make a lot of money by providing the food we eat. This year's Rich List shows that three UK manufacturing families -- the Samworths, Warburtons and Boparans -- are worth more than half a billion (yes, billion) pounds each.
Only one of these names -- Warburtons, the bakers -- is likely to be familiar to consumers. The others make food products that are sold under a variety of brand names, or as own-label products by retailers. Samworth, for example, claims to produce 50% of all the UK’s pork pies and 85% of the UK’s authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pies, as well as Ginster's pasties. The Boparan brothers' empire includes Two Sisters Foods, which manufactures a variety of own-label and branded foods, as well as restaurant chains Giraffe, Harry Ramsden's and Ed's Easy Diner.
The analysis, by the food industry magazine foodmanufacture, is based on the Sunday Times Rich List, published every April, which details the 1,000 richest people living in the UK. Read more . here
