March 22 is World Water Day

This year's annual celebration focuses on the people who bring us safe water -- or protect us from excess water

Water is important to all of us, whether there is too much of it in the wrong places, as in the UK over the past winter, or not enough of it. Every year since 1993, the UN has organised World Water Day to focus attention on this precious resource. This year, many of the activities worldwide will draw attention to the importance of water to jobs -- including many food jobs, since water is essential not just to growing food but also in many food manufacturing processes. But the UN points out that nearly all jobs are related to water, and it directs attention to the people everywhere who ensure its safe delivery. Globally, millions of people who work in water are still not protected by basic labour rights.
