EU plans overhaul of organic rules

European authorities have agreed to update and harmonise EU legislation on organic production.

The new rules aim to guarantee fair competition for farmers and operators, prevent fraud and unfair practices, and improve consumer confidence in organic products. They will also enlarge the scope of organic rules to cover a wider list of products (e.g. salt, cork, beeswax, vine leaves and palm hearts) and additional production regimes (e.g. for deer, rabbits and poultry). A new system of group certification is intended to make it easier for small farmers to gain organic certification, by reducing inspection and certification costs.  After further procedural checks, the new regulation is expected to apply from 1 July 2020.
