Pig protection reaches new nasal heights

Celebrities lead the way, as thousands turn up their noses, literally, in protest against pigs reared in inhumane conditions

It's Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry as you've never seen them. Sustain member Farms not Factories uses film-making and campaigning to expose the true costs of cheap meat from animal factories. For its latest campaign, it has persuaded a raft of famous faces to turn up their noses and be photographed, in order to persuade people to choose pork from local, healthy, high-welfare farms.

Farms not Factories lists five main reasons why pork from intensive pig farms should be avoided:
  • It poses a threat to public health through antibiotic over-use;
  • It undermines real farmers and rural economies;
  • It destroys local environments, watercourses and precious ecosystems;
  • It perpetuates animal abuse through confinement, mutilation, exploitation, neglect and denial of natural behaviours;
  • It contributes to the globalisation of livestock systems and the loss of food sovereignty.
