The Soil Association's chief executive, Helen Browning has written to Liz Truss, secretary of state at the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to highlight the urgently needed long-term plan to improve and protect UK soil. The letter pointed out that protection for our soil would safeguard food production, increase resilience to drought and flooding and improve wildlife habitats. Browning added that the most recent Countryside Survey report on Soils - conducted in 2007 - showed a clear trend of declining soil carbon in the arable & horticultural soils of Great Britain.
