Take action now to support the School Holidays (Meals and Activities) Bill

There is still time to contact your MP to ask them to support Frank Field’s Holiday Hunger Bill before its second reading on Friday 19th of January. The End Hunger UK campaign have created a template message that can be used to contact your MP.

The bill, entitled School Holidays (Meals and Activities) Bill, aims to ensure the provision of food and activities during the holidays for children who are in areas of high deprivation and are suffering from food poverty.

Whilst children from low income households are entitled to free meals during term time, this provision stops during the school holidays. The extra financial cost of providing meals during this period can stretch tight budgets and push families even further into food poverty. A recent report by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Hunger found that as many as three million children faced the risk of food insecurity over the summer holidays.

Josh Fenton-Glynn, manager of the End Hunger UK campaign, says consensus is growing, and urges the Government to act. He says that “Everyone should have access to good food, and children in particular need good nutrition 365 days a year, not only on the days when they are at school,”.
