Local food can save the countryside

The conservation organisation CPRE has produced a guide to local food, on the grounds that choosing local products helps to preserve the character of the countryside and the livelihoods of the people who look after it.

Sustain member the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has produced a pocket guide to local food (which it defines as food produced within 30 miles).

CPRE advocates for a 'beautiful and living' countryside, and definitely sees food as an important element in this picture. It argues that a flourishing local food sector can encourage consumption of a seasonal and varied diet, reconnect communities with farmers, create jobs, revitalise town centres, and reduce pollution and food miles. The pocket guide, available here, is intended to make it easier for people all over England to choose local food.
