Nestle to reduce sugar in confectionery by 5%

Admitting that the food industry's performance so far on child obesity has been misdirected, Nestle has said it will remove 18,000 tones of sugar from its European products by 2020, equivalent to a 5% reduction from current levels.

Announcing the move, Nestle Vice-President Marco Settembri said, 'For too long our industry has been focused on the mantra that we need to look at the lifestyle, not only the diet. But when one in three of our children is overweight or obese, we need to look at ourselves and agree that we have to do a much better job'.

Ways of reducing sugar will include producing smaller-sized portions, using fibre instead of sugar, and using a patented method of structuring sugar particles so they are hollow, which reportedly allows less sugar to be used without impacting taste.
