Collaboration for sustainable food in the North West

A new Briefing Paper from Sustain member the Food Research Collaboration describes the development of the Sustainable Food North West Research Collaboration.

Regions have been increasingly recognised in recent years to play an important role in both understanding and tackling food sustainability issues. The North West of England, like many regions, is facing increasing pressure and scrutiny over its ability to feed its population in a sustainable manner. In this context, the Sustainable Food North West Research Collaboration (SusFoodNW) was established by the University of Central Lancashire and Manchester Metropolitan University in 2015.

The initial idea emerged from discussions between researchers and members of Sustainable Food Lancashire, an umbrella body bringing together a range of community-based and other stakeholder organisations working for a more sustainable food supply. Subsequent discussions between the two universities revealed strong links with a wider range of civil society organisations and a thirst to forge a collaborative approach in the North West. SusFoodNW was the result, and this Briefing Paper charts its progress to date.
