Sainsbury's phases out multi-buys

Retailer abandons wasteful policy of steering consumers into multiple purchases

Sainsbury's is to phase out almost all its multi-buy, buy-one-get-one-free promotions by August 2016. The move covers all ranges, including branded and own-brand soft drinks, confectionery, biscuits and crisps. The retailer says the promotions will be replaced by regular, lower prices. It is taking the step in response to customers' criticisms that multi-buy promotions lead to waste, because they buy more than they need. They also contribute to unhealthy eating habits and obesity. Sainsbury's says that by eliminating the promotions on salty or sugary snack food and drinks, it is furthering its commitment to make healthier choices  easier for customers.
