UN appeals for an end to soil degradation

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is marking the end of the International Year of Soils with an appeal to reverse the current rate of soil degradation.

The UN said the world’s soils are in grave danger due to expanding cities, deforestation, pollution and climate change. The UNFAO estimates that about 33% of global soils are already degraded and this must be reversed through sustainable soil management practices.
