Now in its sixth year, the challenge invites people to enter in 17 categories. This includes the Real Bread Campaign class, where artificial additives are not permitted…though the Campaign urges entrants not to use additives in any category!

Everyone, whether baker or not, is invited to vote for their favourite bakery for the People’s Choice award.

Judges include  Real Bread Campaign co-founder Andrew Whitley, Campaign ambassadors Richard Bertinet, Aidan Chapman, Duncan Glendinning and Emmanuel Hadjiandreou, and Campaign coordinator Chris Young.

Closing dates are 5 September for professional and home baker categories and 12 September for the trainee baker category. Entries have to be delivered for judging on Wednesday 26 September.

Five bread winning tips
Taken from issue 33 of True Loaf magazine.

  • Practice, practice and practice again: Get it right before entering
  • Bake more than one of each loaf: Cut one open to make sure they’re fully proved and fully baked
  • Keep it simple: Don’t be too weird and wonderful, work with the flavour of the flour to get the best out of it
  • Enter everything: Get experience and gain feedback by entering competitions
  • Be proud and tell people when you win: In fact, tell EVERYONE by all methods available to spread the good news
