Food Issues Census 2016 Survey

The Big Lottery Fund, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the JMG Foundation – all funders of work on food and farming issues – have commissioned a survey to better understand the activities, priorities and funding needs of people working in this sector.

This work is to follow up on the very successful 2011 Food Issues Census (see the report here). They have been advised and supported in this by Sustain and the Environmental Funders Network. The Food Ethics Council is carrying out the survey and subsequent analysis.

We invite you to take part in the survey. We believe that a better understanding of current activity will help us and others to make the case for funding work on food and farming issues, and to make more effective decisions about priorities, especially in light of the recent Brexit vote in the UK. Your response will contribute to this and help raise the profile of organisations such as your own among grant-making foundations. Our analysis will be available to you as a report and a simple web tool, which will allow you to extract more detailed information to support your own work. While the results will be anonymous, every organisation completing the survey will be acknowledged on the website and in the report that we send to grant-makers.

If your organisation does any not-for-profit or public interest work relating to food in the UK – from community food-growing projects to campaigning against hunger – then please take part by visiting the survey website. For the results to be useful to you, us and others, we need as many relevant organisations as possible to take the survey.

The survey takes on average 20 minutes to complete - you can stop and continue at any point. You will need your most recent annual or management accounts, financial accounts, and a good understanding of staffing and activities across your organisation’s work on food. If you are unsure whether you should complete the survey, please refer to the FAQ section on the survey website.

If you provide contact details, Food Ethics Council will report back to you on this work by January 2017. To meet this deadline, we need all the survey responses in by Monday 19th September 2016 and would be very grateful if you would take the survey as soon as possible. If you have any questions or comments, please email Dan Crossley, Executive Director at the Food Ethics Council: dan@foodethicscouncil.org or call him on +44 (0) 333 012 4147.

Please forward this to any other organisations you think should be included in the survey.
