US counts the cost of avian flu

The US avian flu crisis may be over for now but it has cost the US egg and poultry industry nearly $390 million in lost exports alone.

The figures came from the USA Poultry and Egg Export Council, who said that though some countries had lifted import restrictions, the US industry was bracing itself for a return of the virus in the Autumn. The virus wiped out 48 million birds in many US states.
