Reaping Rewards: Can communities grow a million meals for London?

This landmark report, Reaping Rewards, tracks the achievements of the Growing a Million Meals for London campaign, run by the Capital Growth network, helping 160 community food growing spaces in London to record over 21 tonnes of produce, worth over £150,000. On this basis, we estimate that London's community food growers could be growing as much as £1.4 million worth of food over the course of a year.

Based on this analysis, and knowledge of the types and sizes of food growing spaces throughout the 2,200+ membership of the Capital Growth network, we estimate that London's community food growers could be growing as much as £1.4 million worth of food over the course of a year.

The aim of the Growing a Million Meals campaign was to see how much food the network was growing, and how urban food growing spaces could be supported to increase their yield. The report provides details of how this was run, including the development of an online tool, the Harvest-ometer, and various materials and activities to engage and help growing spaces.

The report reviews the effectiveness of the support provided and presents the analysis of the data, which shows interesting findings for food growing in the capital, including the most popular produce types grown and estimation for the value of the crops being grown across the Capital Growth Network.

Capital Growth: We believe everyone should have the opportunity to grow food as part of a healthy, resilient food system and we are working with our network of growers in London to make this happen.
