Watch our video which provides one interpretation of what might have happened in July or early August 2016 to account for the missing pages from the eventual lacklustre version of the Strategy finally released.
On 18 August 2016, the Government launched its Childhood Obesity Plan. At only 13 pages long, it was noticeably thinner - and lighter on detail - than previous leaked versions, let alone what might have been expected from a comprehensive strategy to protect children’s health and reduce the impact on the NHS budget for years to come. Whole sections which had been in before were missing: (i) on reducing the junk food adverts shown on programmes popular with children (ii) on restrictions to non-broadcast marketing to children (iii) on price promotions (iv) and on ‘healthier checkouts’. And there was no mention of food industry marketing in schools and food industry’s sponsorship of sports and activities for children either.
This video is one interpretation of what might have happened in July or early August 2016 to account for the missing pages.
