News Real Bread Campaign

We bet the binned loaves aren’t Real Bread

The Real Bread Campaign believes that the 24 million slices that Love Food Hate Waste reports UK households bin every day, are likely to be from industrial loaves.

The Love Food Hate Waste study also found that people from around 1 in 5 households admit to throwing away whole, unopened loaves.

It seems unlikely to us at the Real Bread Campaign that people who have invested their time in baking Real Bread, or money in buying it from a local, independent bakery, would treat it with such disregard.

Instead, we believe that the vast majority, if not all, of the waste uncovered by the survey was from industrial loaves that people simply do not value.

The Real Bread Campaign supports Waste Less Live More Week and our tips on how to reduce waste include:

  • Choosing genuine sourdough, which has a natural preservative effect
  • Slicing and freezing loaves to use when needed
  • Avoiding bake-off ‘loaf tanning salon’ products that stale very quickly
  • Seeking delicious recipes to recycling stale Real Bread
