Bruce Charles 'Bill' Mollison, 1928 - 2016

Sustainable growers are urged to plant a tree in remembrance of the 'father of permaculture', who died last month.

Sustain member the Permaculture Association has sorrowfully announced the death of Bill Mollison, the founder of their movement and pioneer of sustainable and perennial methods of agriculture. He died on 24 September, in Sisters Creek, Tasmania.

Mollison was a biologist, grower, philosopher and educator. In the 1970s, with David Holmgren, he developed the principles of permaculture, which work with nature to meet human needs.

Mollison founded the Permaculture Institute in Tasmania, and created a system to train others under the umbrella of permaculture which has now taught thousands of people throughout the world.

He asked his friends and students to remember him by planting a tree. The Permaculture Association invites anyone who does so to share a photo on twitter here. They will collect the photos for a montage later in the year.
