Ben Reynolds, Deputy Chief Executive of Sustain, said:
“We are concerned about the proposal to go back on their commitment made in 2015 to fund provision of Universal Infant Free School Meals until 2020, especially since the scheme has not undergone effective evaluation. Equally there are no monitoring arrangements in place to ensure the food and drink meets School Food Standards; and academies and free schools are under no obligation to meet those Standards in the first place. We believe the next government should make these commitments ensuring parents can have the confidence that the food served to their children at school is nutritionally-balanced and meets sustainability standards.”
As part of the Save Our School Food Standards alliance, we wrote to all party leaders about school food. You can read the letter we sent to Theresa May here.
