WWF estimate that of the 284 million tonnes of soy produced in 2013/14, 75% was used as animal feed. The main problem with this is that soy is often grown at the expense of important habitats such as the Amazon rainforest, the Cerrado and the Gran Chaco in South America. WWF point out that expansion of soy into these areas also affects local people, water reserves and soil quality. However there are initiatives that support and develop responsible soy production.
