The Big Lunch is a nationwide celebration of community spirit. Organised by the Eden Project, it started off -- in the Eden Project's words -- with a simple idea: one day a year when, for a few glorious hours, cars would stop, shyness evaporate, gloom lift, and people come together in the street to meet, greet, share, swap, sing, play and laugh for no reason other than that we all need to.
Thus was The Big Lunch born. Since it began in 2009, it has grown ten-fold and each year gets bigger. In 2016, 7.3 million people took to their streets, gardens and neighbourhoods to join in for a few hours of community, friendship and fun at over 90,000 events.
