Wales belatedly includes obesity in Public Health Bill

Having originally focussed on tobacco and the provision of public toilets, the Public Health (Wales) Bill has been amended to require the Government to produce an obesity strategy.

A Plaid Cymu member of the Welsh Assembly has moved an amendment to the Public Health (Wales) Bill requiring Welsh Ministers to bring forward a strategy for preventing obesity and reducing obesity levels in Wales.

As the Assembly Member pointed out, given that  59% of Welsh adults were overweight in 2015, and more than 25% of children either overweight or obese, the omission of any plan to tackle obesity was a surprising omission from the original version. The Bill was passed in amended form (here) on 16 May.
