Fresh from its success in highlighting the plight of EU rabbit farming, Sustain member
Compassion in World Farming has been investigating the conditions in which quails and quail eggs are produced. The results are disturbing.
Quail are the third most caged farm animal in Europe, and there is no species-specific legislation to protect them. Each year over 140 million quail are farmed for meat. Most are reared in crowded warehouses or densely packed cages. Of the 400,000 quail farmed every year for their eggs, over 90% are caged.
These birds have no earth or undergrowth to explore, nowhere to dustbathe, nowhere to hide, and barely space to move. The space allowance per factory farmed quail may be no bigger than a beer mat.
As part of its campaign to end the Cage Age, CIWF is calling for supporters to
sign its petition against this cruel form of food production.
