There were so many entries for the Fairtrade Fortnight Schools Awards this year that the judges had to schedule extra time to review them. After mulling over a range of imaginative entries, the prizes -- £350 each to the two winners, and £100 each to all the runners-up -- the winners were announced.
The junior pupils at St Edmund’s School, Canterbury, used Fairtrade wrappers to make an amazing papier-mache breakfast display for a Fairtrade fair in their local church. They also ran a Fairtrade café, a Traidcraft stall and decorated aprons with Fairtrade messages to sell to visitors. They even found time to have a Fairtrade breakfast.
At Imberhorne School, East Grinstead, all of the events were organised by sixth formers, who worked with every year group. They wrote lesson plans and PowerPoint presentations for the teachers to use with each class, and scripts tailored to different year groups' assemblies. They also visited local primary schools and a local Beaver group, appeared on local radio and ran another very successful Fairtrade Fun Day for the whole school.
There are now more than 1000 Fairtrade Schools around the country, explaining and demonstrating the principles of Fairtrade. If you would like to join, or to find a Fairtrade School near you, click
