Scotland aims to boost home-grown public procurement

A concerted effort by government and industry will help more Scottish-grown food find its way onto menus in schools, hospitals and other public settings, to support Scotland's food and drink sector.

The Scottish government will spend £750 million on food and drink between now and 2021, but less than half of these public procurement contracts are currently serviced by Scottish producers and food businesses.

The Government wants this proportion to rise, and convened a summit with the food industry, including caterers and buyers, to discuss how Scottish firms could be helped to access more public sector food and drink contracts, supporting the domestic food and drink sector.

Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing urged businesses to sign up to the free Public Contracts Scotland website (here), to find information on opportunities to supply the public sector in Scotland.

The plan is also supported by Scotland Excel, a non-profit making organisation funded by all 32 Scottish councils that supplies procurement expertise to the local government sector.
