The decision by French legislators came after concerted campaigning by French NGOs, reinforced by public pressure. Emma Slawinski, CIWF's Director of Campaigns, said she hoped the move would be a catalyst for the UK, where investigations have also shown terrible suffering when slaughter is not carried out humanely and according to standards of best practice. Although an increasing number of British slaughterhouse operators have installed CCTV cameras in all or part of their premises, without a law to enforce installation, it currently remains voluntary.
