MSC certifies 20,000th product

The sustainable seafood certifier's milestone product shows how certified sustainable fish and shellfish now traverse the globe

The Marine Stewardship Council has passed an important milestone with the launch of its 20,000th labelled product -- a frozen paella to be sold in Netto stores in Germany. A decade ago, there were only 1000 MSC-labeled products on the market.

The paella contains pollock from Alaska and Russia, blue shell mussels from Denmark, and shrimps from Suriname. The product illustrates a growing trend in certified seafood, which is increasingly being used in combined or processed foods, from paella to sandwiches, pizza and baby food.  Its distribution via the discounter Netto illustrates that certified fish is no longer an elite option.

MSC certification now covers more than 100 species, and products are available in more than 100 countries. Join Sustain's campaign to Point the Fish Finger at high-street chains selling unsustainable fish here.
