From the entrepreneur behind EasyJet and EasyHotel comes the new ultra-low price EasyFoodStore. The shop, which opened this month in Brent, offers a variety of tinned and packaged goods for just 25p (prices expected to rise to 50p after the initial offer).
Is this shop an innovative private sector solution to rising rates of food poverty in the nation's capital?
Hannah Laurison, Sustain, commented "Brent, which is one of the four worst performing boroughs on poverty, surely needs innovation from all corners to ensure that residents have an adequate diet. For those in food poverty, the lower prices might be a real boon. London's Mayor has already recognised the need for more affordable food through his £300K investment in 'social supermarkets."
"But is more cheap food really what we need? The Guardian reports that crisps sold out in the first few days. Let's hope that EasyFoodStore follows the good example of organisations like FareShare who make every effort to ensure that they offer shoppers a balanced range of healthy foods."
