Since the pandemic, the importance of community green spaces has been highlighted as important for mental health, but many Londoners have no or limited access to natural green spaces. The Story Garden is located in one of the most densely populated parts of the city, providing an oasis to reconnect local residents with the natural world.
Global Generation use this garden to run workshops for people of all ages to learn skills in horticulture and growing, helping build skills for future training and employment, while also growing produce for a local food bank and seedlings to distribute to the community.
During the Covid-19 crisis they have adapted to provide online courses and workshops, upped the volume of vegetables grown to donate and have run smaller group sessions in the garden. They are raising money to enable them to continue running safe and comfortable sessions in the garden and provide this this vital connection with nature. This includes rebuilding their outdoor kitchen area to run cookery classes, renting a stretch tent to provide shelter for winter workshops, and building a second poly tunnel to increase their capacity for horticulture training and qualifications.
