News Real Bread Campaign

Published: Thursday 16 April 2026

UK taxpayers can now help Sustain (the charity that runs the Real Bread Campaign) to reclaim 25p in tax from the Government for every £1 of your annual subscription and other donations to us.

With just a few clicks, you'll contribute to us being able to claim thousands of pounds in Gift Aid from the Government. That sort of extra income could tip the balance between Sustain continuing to run your Real Bread Campaign, or having to call it a day on it.

To make a Gift Aid declaration

  • You must be a UK taxpayer.
  • Your subscription / donations must come from a personal / sole trader / self-employed / partnership account.
  • The amount of Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax you pay in a tax year must be at least as much as the Gift Aid we claim.

Check and sign your Gift Aid declaration

If you want / need to change or check your declaration or postal address, you can do so by logging into your dashboard.

Notes

  • To be clear: the extra 25% / 25p per £1 that we (Sustain) claim will come from the Government, not you.
  • We can claim Gift Aid on donations from indiviuduals, sole traders / self-employed people, and business partnerships - for the latter, each partner has to sign a declaration.
  • We cannot claim Gift Aid on any payments / donations from limited companies, or on donations you have collected from other people to pass on to us – for example from customers during Real Bread Week or Sourdough September.
  • If you’re a Level 4 Campaign supporter paying £121 per year, your annual tax bill will only have to be £30.25 or more for us to claim Gift Aid – minimum tax bills for supporters at the lower subscription Levels are even less.

This is the payoff
The ability to claim Gift Aid is the main reason we stopped arranging discounts for Real Bread Campaign supporters.

Even though those offers were used by very few of our supporters, the collective value claimed by that minority pushed the average value over the government’s ‘benefit rule’ threshold, preventing us from claiming most of the Gift Aid that we now can.
