The European Commission have published a proposal for a directive on unfair trading practices in business-to-business relationships in the food supply chain. The proposal would include effective enforcement: sanctions that can be imposed by national authorities when infringements re established.

The proposal is welcomed by Sustain member Friends of the Earth Europe but what the directive to go further. Their Food & Agriculture Campaigner, Stanka Becheva, said:

“A small number of retailers control big parts of the food market in Europe. Although we welcome a legal framework to strengthen the position of farmers, we want to see complementary measures to support direct sales and short food supply chains, which bring the most for farmers, consumers and the environment.”

Sustain believes that the powers of the UK’s Groceries Code Adjudicator should be extended.
