The first Scottish Bread Championships opens for entries

Real Bread bakers across Scotland are invited to enter the inaugural Scottish Bread Championships at the Royal Highland Show 2017.

First held in 1822, The Royal Highland Show is the highlight of the Scottish agricultural calendar, attracting around 190,000 visitors. This is the first time that Real Bread has been celebrated at the Show.

Created and convened by Scotland The Bread and Scottish Food Guide, the Championships are open to any baker, professional or amateur.  All entries must be Real Bread, that is: made without the use of processing aids or any other artificial additives.

The entry classes are:

  • Sourdough
  • Made with 100% Scottish flour (ie milled from Scottish-grown grain)
  • Traditional or ancient Scottish recipe
  • Excelling in natural nutritional quality
  • Scottish ‘plain loaf’
  • Gluten-free
  • Certified organic

Entry in up to three classes is £5 + VAT for Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland members and £10 + VAT for everyone else. Postal entries must be submitted by 12 May, with email applications accepted until 19 May.

Bakers will then be invited to send/deliver their loaves on Tuesday 20 June for judging by a panel convened by Real Bread Campaign co-founder Andrew Whitley and including Campaign coordinator Chris Young.

Entries that the judges believe meet a standard of excellence will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. There will be no limit on the number of awards given in any class, and if no entry in a class is considered to have met the standard then no award will be given.  Judges will also announce one overall Supreme Champion and one Reserve Champion.

The Royal Highland Show runs for 22-25 June, during which the Scottish Bread Championships awards will be presented.
