Public Health watchdog publishes sugar reduction targets for industry

Public Health England (PHE) has published guidelines setting out how the food industry should act to help children consume less sugar, targeting the everyday foods that contribute the most to children's sugar intakes.

The guidelines include recommended sugar limits for nine food groups, including biscuits, breakfast cereals, yogurt, confectionery, ice creams, spreads (including peanut butter) and cakes.

One of the main commitments in the Government’s childhood obesity plan was to reduce the amount of sugar contained in manufactured foods. The industry's challenge is to reduce sugar by 5% by August 2017 and overall by 20% by 2020. The guidelines suggest the industry can meet the target by reformulating products,  reducing the size of single portions, and shifting consumer purchasing towards lower or no added sugar products.
