Organic Trade Board takes its case to Parliament

A meeting of MPs will hear that a unique opportunity exists to expand one of the most buoyant sectors of the UK food and farming system.

Sustain member the Organic Trade Board, which recently anounced it had won 10 million Euros of funding, in partnership with Organic Denmark, to promote organic production in the UK and Ireland, now has a chance to take its message to MPs in the House of Commons.

On 22 June, Adrian Blackshaw, OTB's chair, along with Paul Holmbeck, chair of Organic Denmark, will address food minister George Eustice, members of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs select Committee and others, to make the case for stronger support for organic post-Brexit.

Although the organic market in the UK grew by 7% during 2016, the area of organic farmland is decreasing. Demand is outstripping supply, with the UK a net importer of organic goods. OTB argues that the decsion to leave the EU offers a unique opportunity to reinvigorate policy in this area, to unlock the potential to meet both domestic and new export markets.
