Archers writer turns to theatre to explore sustainable farming

A touring play by agricultural author, campaigner and Archers contributor Graham Harvey has been packing houses beyond Ambridge.

Graham Harvey is probably best known for being agricultural story adviser for the Radio 4 series The Archers. But he is also the author of several respected books, including The Killing of the Countryside, and now he has written a play, No Finer Life, based on George Henderson's 1944 classic The Farming Ladder.

The Farming Ladder told the story of Henderson's experiences and experiments in what he called 'mixed' and we might call sustainable farming in the Cotswolds during the 1940s. It inspired many soldiers returning from WW2 to take up farming, and later inspired Harvey's interest in how agriculture affects the countryside. His play, which features original, live music, was designed for small venues, and has been touring Britain to some acclaim. It runs till the end of April: find the remaining dates and venues here.
