UK food industry seeks to protect use of cleaning chemicals

The UK food industry is mounting a campaign to defend its use of cleaning chemicals, some of which could be outlawed under the European Commission's proposed Biocidal Products Regulation

A group of more than 14 UK food industry associations, led by the Chilled Food Association, is taking concerted action to protect the right to use cleaning chemicals it says are essential to maintaining food safety. The group is also concerned about the introduction of more stringent Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) for chlorates. Chlorates arise from the use of chlorinated water and chlorine-based cleaning products. The current MRL  is 0.01mg of chlorate per kg of food. The food companies argue that if they could not use the sanitisers and disinfectants in question, food safety could be compromised.
