The acronym TRiFOCAL stands for Transforming City Food Habits for Life, which is the objective of a project launched by the London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB), the recycling charity WRAP and the environmental group Groundwork.
Together they have won €3million from the EU to develop strategies for reducing the 540,000 tonnes of edible food waste Londoners chuck out every year. They want to change the way people plan meals, shop, store food and prepare it, as well as promoting healthy and sustainable food choices.
Running for three years from September 2016, TRiFOCAL will work with all 33 London boroughs, engaging with householders, businesses and community organisations, to develop and test strategies that help change behaviour. By the end of the initiative, a ‘food waste behavioural change resource bank’ will be developed, which can be used to help other European cities replicate the achievements of London.
