The 11th annual International Bake Bread for Peace Day is this Thursday, 24 October 2024. Created in 2014 by author, baker, storyteller, singer, artist and activist Breezy Kelly, the aim of the initiative is to create and cultivate joy and peace around the world through the simple act of making bread in your home.

Breezy says: “The wars go on. We want them to stop. We want peace. This Thursday bake and share bread to reach out in peace and for peace!”

How to get involved

The organisers suggest:

  • Simply gather your family or friends, be it in person or on a video meeting.
  • Bake your bread, remember good times and create new memories to share.
  • Tell a story, sing a song, tell us about your country or culture, share a memory.

You can share your photos, videos and comments with Bake Bread for Peace on Facebook or Instagram. You can also email them for the organisers to share.

“Whether you are a prolific baker or a first timer, now is your chance to bring your loved ones together in the name of peace.”

The initiative

Breezy says: “The philosophy of Bake Bread for peace is a simple one: peace starts in the home! Every culture has a relationship with the baking of bread and so it transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity, religion or borders.

The need for peace in the world right now is astounding and it is easy to feel helpless. Getting friends and family together to Bake Bread for Peace is a simple and tangible way to promote peace and build solidarity across the world, by beginning with your own home. To quote a Persian proverb: ‘the drops that gather one by one will eventually become a sea.’”

Breezy adds that Bake Bread for Peace is not run by an organisation and no financial support is required. “We just want people to participate in an initiative that will bring them joy and peace. Peace cannot be bought.”

From small beginnings in Donegal, Ireland, Bake Bread For Peace say they have been joined by participants in around 20 countries.
