Good Food Local is a new national plaform for local authorities in England. It includes a simple self-assessment tool to help local authorities understand where they can take action for a healthy and sustainable food system and environment, and a national map that provides data and learnings from other local authorites taking part.

Local authorities are facing multiple challenges and a changing government agenda. Food policy and practice at a local level can deliver on complex issues such as food poverty, food resilience, diet related ill health, a thriving local economy, and the climate, nature and health crises. But it can be hard to know where to start.

In a recent evaluation of the pilot Good Food Local programme, three quarters of local authorities stated that participation had directly contributed to their authority taking an effective and joined-up approach to food in their area.

The Good Food Local platform is useful for all upper tier authority officer and councillor leads on food, sustainability, public health and economic development. It will also be valuable for those who work with councils including food partnerships, climate alliances and voluntary and community sector organisations.
