UK councils have a hugely important role to play in creating a more healthy and sustainable food system so residents can access affordable, healthy and climate and nature friendly food.

For over 10 years, Sustain has mapped and reported on London’s borough level commitments to good food through the Good Food for All Londoners annual survey and report. This well recognised and respected benchmarking tool highlights council achievements, tells a city wide narrative on food and showcases innovative work, projects and campaigns to push the good food agenda further.

In this exciting new phase of work, funded by Impact on Urban Health, we will replicate London's established approach in other parts of the UK so that more local authorities prioritise healthy and sustainable food and commit to action on a breadth of food issues. In time, we will also create a benchmarking tool available to all local authorities in the UK to support a collective, national voice for councils and promote opportunities for collaboration on our most pressing food issues.

What's in it for regions? Why apply?

Initially, we are looking for one regional partner to pilot this approach in their region over three years. Benefits include:

  • Cementing the region’s profile (locally and nationally) as progressing the good food agenda whilst feeding into a national picture of local authority action on food
  • Providing the region with a better understanding of local performance and opportunities for focus
  • Improving access to and relationships with more regional local authorities
  • Allowing regions to work on long term solutions and cement ideas on food systems thinking
  • Increasing local commissioning on good food projects, complimenting and catalysing local innovation and commitments

How to apply

Sustain has budget available over three years (starting from July 2023) to support the delivery of the activities ideally to be matched by the partner. We are welcoming expressions of interest and the deadline to submit is COP 30 June 2023.

For more details, or if you’d like to book in a call ahead of the submission date to discuss requirements, please contact Hannah Crump (hannah.crump@sustainweb.org).
