Efra committee urges targets to reduce food waste

In one of its last acts before dissolution, the Efra committee published the report of its inquiry into food waste in England, calling for mandatory targets for waste and disposal.

The Parliamentary Select Committee on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) managed to get its report on food waste in England out before Parliament was dissolved.

Key recommendations included:
  • that there should be a national food waste target;
  • that retailers should be set a target of doubling the proportion of surplus food they redistribute to charities and voluntary organisations;
  • that wasteful and needless 'cosmetic' standards should be relaxed;
  • and that separate food waste collections should be offered to as many households as possible.

The report was welcomed by Sustain member Feedback (here), which had given evidence to the Efra inquiry.
