The Big Dig is an online platform to help people that run food growing projects in the UK, and has been developed by Sustain. The Big Dig Day, which this year takesplace on Saturday 27 April, started in London eight years ago and has seen many more cities and local areas get involved since it's launch.

This year we want to make Big Dig bigger and better and we are inviting Veg Cities and other cities in the SFC network to get involved in mapping their gardens and joining the Big Dig Day.

For individual gardens, the Big Dig network can help promote your garden, recruit volunteers and measure how much you are growing (and money you’re saving). For a local area, the Big Dig can help you facilitate and manage a network of growing spaces, map edible gardens in your area and promote the importance of food growing to policy-makers and the public. All gardens can join The Big Dig Day alongside hundreds of other gardens and thousands of visitors and volunteers.

To support local areas and individual gardens participating in The Big Dig Day, we have compiled a digital toolkit containing logos, postcard and poster that gardens can personalise with their details, template press release and social media tips, as well as documents to help you plan and execute a successful and safe event. These resources are available on your dashboard after registration on www.bigdig.org.uk or available for download by following this link.

To learn more, join the SFC webinar, 12 March, 11h00 – 12h05 which will cover the history of the Big Dig and how you can get involved. It will go over the support available for local areas and gardens including digital materials and the web mapping tool. You will hear from Sow the City, a food growing network in Manchester about their experience of mapping growing spaces in the city and joining the Big Dig.
