Fergus Ewing, the Scottish Government's food and farming Minister, has confirmed that preparations have begun for consultations that will inform the content of the Good Food Nation Bill.
During the parliamentary debate (here), MSPs drew attention to research indicating that 40% of all calories are consumed as a result of price promotions for unhealthy foods in supermarkets, and that 70% of Scottish adults support banning promotions of unhealthy foods in supermarkets. The Minister was urged to use the Bill to address this issue, with MSPs suggesting that promotions should instead be used to encourage multi-buys of fruit and vegetables and other healthy foods. They also called on the Bill to consider reframing public procurement rules, to ensure that local food could be procured wherever possible.
