School gardeners transform City Hall into farmer’s market

London's City Hall hosts ten schools for a marketplace full of school-grown produce, jams, fresh scones and plants for sale.

Ten schools from across London gathered in City Hall’s main atrium on 9 July for a marketplace to sell and celebrate all the amazing produce from their school gardens. A delicious and varied assortment was on sale, including homemade jams and chutney, hanging herb baskets, fresh salsa and pesto, lavender soap and garden grown thyme shortbread and mint brownies. City Hall chef, Simon Caple, paid a visit to the marketplace offering all the students a delicious, homemade Eton Mess (with a recipe card to try at home later). Many staff from City Hall popped in throughout the day, giving students a chance to promote their hard work and sell their wares. Mayor Boris Johnson also stopped by during the afternoon to chat with each group, purchase a few items and help award prizes for the Food Growing Schools London: Grow Your Own Garden competition.

Rosie Boycott, Chair of London Food, said: “It’s fantastic to see the enthusiasm among teachers, children and parents around growing and eating fresh, healthy food in schools. Involving school children in growing food helps to foster a love of good, healthy and nutritious produce, which is why the Mayor is supporting this initiative.”

Schools that participated in the festivities included

  • Bensham Manor, Croydon
  • Bethnal Green Academy, Tower Hamlets
  • Charlton Park Academy, Greenwich
  • Christ Church CE Primary, Wandsworth
  • Glebe School, Bromley
  • Park View Secondary, Haringey
  • Rhyl Primary, Camden
  • Selwyn Primary, Newham
  • The UCL Academy, Camden
