Low-carbon farming is the future for Scotland

Scotland's newly published Draft Climate Change Plan includes an upbeat section on  agriculture, which makes the case for low-carbon farming that would be good for both the planet and food producers’ pockets.

The draft proposals Scotland has published as part of its plans to reduce and mitigate climate change include a three-stage plan for farming, with milestones at 2020, 2030 and 2050.

Among other things, large- and small-scale farmers will be supported to understand the pH and nutrient value of their soils, and the carbon footprint of their enterprises, so they can learn to farm in more climate-friendly ways, with attendant benefits for water quality and biodiversity. The Plan argues that these steps will also enable farmers to farm more profitably.  Read Scotland's Draft Climate Change Plan here.
