Hull launches revamped handbook for growers

February 2023 saw Hull Food Partnership launching a new edition of their Hull Growers’ Handbook at a bustling Seed Swap.

John Pickles, Hull Food Partnership’s previous Veg Cities Campaign Coordinator, was the mastermind behind the first iteration of the Hull Growers’ Handbook. He realised that there was a lack of comprehensive information for people new to growing food in the local area, especially given that Hull and East Yorkshire have specific growing conditions that aren’t necessarily covered in more general guides.

The booklet is aimed at amateur and new growers, including families with children who may be interested in having a go at growing their own food. It includes guides on when to sow different veg, and advice on which vegetables are easier to grow for beginners. It signposts to gardens, allotments, and people in Hull as examples of success or as places where people can learn new techniques by taking part.

Over 300 people attended the launch event to take part in the day’s activities, incluing a seed swap, and hear from local food organisations. TimeBank Kitchen, a local caterer who work to reduce food waste and support sustainable local food production, provided food on the day.

Anna Route, the Food Partnership Coordinator in Hull, says: “All of us at Hull Food Partnership were a bit overwhelmed by the enthusiastic response and the numbers of people coming through the door throughout the day. The different community organisations across Hull got the opportunity to showcase the brilliant work they are doing, often unsung. It wouldn’t have happened without the excellent speakers, the volunteers, and the venue staff giving up their time and energy to support the Seed Swap. We can’t praise them enough, and it’s lovely to have such a positive event for the city that we can build upon for future years.”
